Doris Hilburn

Exmoor ‘Doris Hilburn’

Doris Hilburn, the first of four Exmoor locomotives based at the BMR, was constructed by the Exmoor Locomotive Works at their workshop in Bratton Fleming, Devon, in 2004.

She started life at John Rayners private Sutton Valence Railway, a private line situated in Kent, named ‘Audrey’ originally. Apart from a spell at CMD Engineering for work on her boiler tubes, she remained at the Sutton Valence Railway until moving to Barnards.

A short time after arrival, she was renamed ‘Doris Hilburn’, a relative of Bernard Holmes, who started Barnards Farm as we know it today.

She is a popular locomotive amongst drivers, known for her free-steaming, and being more than capable of pulling our 7 coach trains.
